iFixit Repair Manual

Team Members: Addison Kliewer, Rikileigh Perry

Process

Along with my two team members, Addison Kliewer and Rikileigh Perry, I developed a repair and troubleshooting guide for the Gateway 1200 Solo laptop in parternship with iFixit. iFixit is an organization that advocates for the Right to Repair and believes strongly in empowering consumers to repair their own devices and minimizing waste.

Our team received the Gateway 1200 device directly from iFixit. The device was not in working condition and it was up to us to open the device (using iFixit's toolkit) and identify each component to figure out how the device worked.

I served as the team leader for this project. I assigned each member a role based on their strengths: Addison was lead designer, Rikileigh was lead author, and I was group leader/editor. We developed the repair manual and troubleshooting guide using iFixit’s style guide and web tools. Working with the iFixit Technical Writing team, we sent in an initial proposal for our project as well as drafts of our edits throughout the course of eight weeks. We received feedback from the iFixit team and made corrections as needed.

Results

At the end of the eight-week process, we had repair guides written for five components of the device, pictures of each repair process, and a troubleshooting guide. As of October 2022, our Gateway Solo 1200 guide has received over 100 views and seven completions.
